"Jeremy, Yana, take that metal plate up against that hole and seal it!" yelled a blond Lieutenant Lucas Lemmens. His group had just taken down two Demigods who fired into the building they were barricaded in. Armed with assault rifles they managed to take down as many as ten Demigods since sunrise, becoming the most successful platoon in the army. The Lieutenant however didn't have a care in the world for statistics. He had lost several men under his command and their bodies were still in the vicinity.
Having started off with thirty soldiers under his command he was now down to eight but they were his best.
"Tekoa, ammo check!" yelled Filips, a sturdy and bald man with a tough goatee who had rolled up his sleeves, revealing a fine tattoo of a burning sword. Everyone was sprawled underneath the windowpanes, hiding from sight and taking cover from any random shots. Tekoa, a man with short curly hair crawled towards towards the nearest ammo box and peered inside.
"We're going to need a runner soon." he announced before taking a short break on the floor.
"Albert." the Lieutenant snapped his fingers, trying to get the man's attention.
"Yes sir?" he replied.
"I need eyes on safe route back to nearest retreat point."
"Yes sir, but I can't run." The Lieutenant became irritated at his response.
"Why the hell not?"
"I stretched my right calf muscle and it's only getting worse."
Jeremy and Yana managed to seal the hole in the building and reported back to the Lieutenant .
"Yana, are you good to run?"
"Yes sir." Pleased to hear her response, the Lieutenant immediately sent her off with Albert.
"Tekoa, get the fuck up. We don't have time for breaks!" Tekoa jumped up from his position and immediately hurried off to the nearest window. Lucas looked out from his own and studied the city streets. There was commotion ten blocks away to their west. Most of the Demigods attacked from the south, from France, which was where most of them were regrouping and taking orders from.
The Lieutenant looked over at one of his men who had his head to his knees, depressed and completely out of it, whispering something to himself constantly. He had been this way for the past two hours now. Lucas usually gave his men a hard time, forcing their best efforts, always keeping them alert and on edge, but he gave this one man his space. The others understood his decision to stay away, keep their silence.
Two hours ago they lost five soldiers to one Demigod. After the Lieutenant had ordered six of them to recover a child from the dead hands of a Demigod mother, they were taken by surprise. The child, whom they guessed was around the age of eight, maybe even younger, also possessed powers. The mother had powers based on water, who had summoned draughts in the area which ceased the moment she was killed in action. Right after her death a child leapt into her arms, crying her name. The group of six were ordered to take the child away from harm and bring her back to the closest retreat point.
The lives of five soldiers were lost because they forgot the number one rule; absolutely anyone, of any age, could be a Demigod. The moment the soldiers were on the streets, crossing the road to get to the child, the air began to feel different. Everyone knew something was wrong. They were only a couple of meters away from the child, a beautiful brown haired girl with green eyes, a human being magnificently gifted with beauty at a young age who probably loved school and toys and everything a child loves, before five of the soldiers were obliterated from existence.
The child had shaken the immediate vicinity with a horrifying shockwave, killing everyone but one soldier. That one soldier had been pushed off his feet. The child didn't attack him. They believed it was because she had gotten exhausted, some thought she was horrified. But the one soldier didn't care what it was. He had the responsibility to take the life of that child. Ever since he looked into her green eyes and adorable little face he was perplexed. His soul had been taken from him. His mind had rushed through a million scenarios but he knew only one could take place.
Lieutenant Lucas let the man have his space. Not everyone could live with that burden. Not everyone can take the life of a child.
"Eyes on possible target, south side, two blocks, male, black shirt, navy blue jeans." stated Filips. The Lieutenant crawled over and sat down beside Filips before popping his head out of the window with his binoculars.
"No ordinary civilian walks with that kind of posture. Definite Demigod." Everyone immediately took cover on the south side of the building and readied their weapons.
Tekoa grabbed hold of a loud speaker and hid behind cover.
"You with the black shirt! Identify yourself!"
"Human!" They heard the man yell. Yeah right, they all thought.
"Put your hands in the air!"
"Where are you guys?"
"Put your hands in the air! We'll come get you!" Tekoa repeated.
"Where are you guys?" The men began to eye each other suspiciously.
"Keep your eyes on him." The Lieutenant whispered.
"We will be with you shortly, just stay calm." Tekoa stated.
"Where are you guys!?"
"I'm sensing a load of fucking ego and testosterone from this guy. My money's on Demigod." Filips grunted.
"Ok, On my count," The Lieutenant addressed, "we take aim, Tekoa gets his attention, any slight movement and we kill the fucker. Clear?"
"Clear" said the rest in unison.
Lucas gave the count and the group took aim at the possible Demigod. Not a second later the man in the black shirt levitated a nearby black car and tossed it at their location.
"Take cover!" The vehicle crash landed perfectly into the third floor which they were in but no one was hurt. Smoke covered the room and debris was falling from the ceiling. As the men tried to regain their balance the vehicle in the room began to rattle. Taking a few steps back, the men watched the car vibrate in its place as if it was coming to life and all of a sudden it did.
The vehicle tossed and turned inside the room crashing into every available space. Tekoa was immediately pushed outside the window, two others crushed between the vehicle and the walls. Lucas tried to dodge the now spinning car but the rear end managed to crush his left foot. The force spun him round before hitting the nearest wall. He quickly turned around to see what was happening but he was in agony. The bones in his foot were definitely crushed. The vehicle was now jumping about in the room.
Someone suddenly started to pull the Lieutenant from his bulletproof vest by the shoulders and out of the room. It was the inactive soldier, pulling him with incredible strength out of the area as fast as he could.
"We have to get out of here sir!" he yelled.
"Just one shot Ben!" That was the soldier's name. "They're not immortal. Just one shot." Ben resentfully nodded and equipped his rifle. Lucas could hear him run down the stairs. The vehicle was still crashing around in the room creating a wrenching sound as the metal kept tearing and bending.
A minute went by before he heard the shot. The car stopped dead and skidded into the wall. A smile crept up the Lieutenant's face as he loudly exhaled. It was done. Ben did it. He killed the Demigod. He awaited patiently for him to get him. He couldn't walk with his broken foot. It longer pained him unless he thought about it or moved. There were slow footsteps coming from the stairs. 'Finally' he thought to himself. He really needed a medic.
Lieutenant Lucas Lemmens looked into the doorway leading to the stairs. The smile fell off of his lips. The Demigod wasn't dead. He walked in a way that reflected his self-admiration. He was very pleased with himself. Lucas immediately told himself that he needed to take only one shot to the head and it would be all over. He quickly aimed the assault rifle at the Demigod and emptied the clip accompanied with a war cry.
The Demigod was still there and smiling after the weapon clicked out of ammo. His shirt was full of holes but he seemed unscathed. The vehicle began to rattle again. Lucas wanted to cry. The Demigod grabbed him by his broken foot and pulled him into the room with the wild car. The sounds were terrifying and the impact it created upon solid surface alone was horrifying.
"And now it's your turn." the Demigod simply announced, gleefully watching the car, clapping his hands together before firmly clasping Lucas's broken foot. "Bye bye."
